St. Martin was a Romanesque parish church in Bonn . It was located in the immediate vicinity of Bonn Minster .

history

The Bonn church of St. Martin has been documented in the settlement around the Cassius monastery since 799. It was initially a separate church and was given to the monastery by a landlord named Rungus in 804. In the liber valoris around 1300 it appeared as one of four parish churches in Bonn.

St. Martin was probably performed together with the minster before 1050. It was a central building, possibly based on the model of the Jerusalem Church of the Holy Sepulcher , with an adjoining west building and a protruding apse. Inside the circular complex there was a regular octagon on a concentric circle . The corners of the octagon were formed by coupled columns, towards the apse by pillars. In each of the seven free arch positions there were two arches on a central column. The columns had early Romanesque bases and heavy cube capitals.

In the course of secularization , the Cassius monastery was abolished and the minster parish church. St. Martin then fell into disrepair and was finally laid down after most of the church collapsed in 1812. The stones were partially built into a new chapel in Poppelsdorf. The floor plan of St. Martin is marked today in the pavement of Martinsplatz.
