St. Martinus Church

The Catholic parish church of St. Martinus is a single-nave, neo-Gothic brick church in the center of the municipality of Qualburg near Bedburg-Hau on the Lower Rhine . The church of St. Martinus rises on the top of a 17 meter high, alluvial dune and today marks the presumed center of the Roman - Franconian settlement area Quadriburgium .

Building history

The founding date of the church dedicated to Martin von Tours is unknown. In 1143, Count Arnold I of Kleve donated the building to the Bedburg Premonstratensian Monastery. The medieval building was demolished in 1888 and rebuilt as a single-nave brick building in neo-Gothic style by 1890. Only the Gothic choir , which dates from the 15th century, has been preserved.

archeology

During excavations, older, previously undated foundations were found under St. Martinus. A robbed Franconian plate grave from the 7th century was also discovered. In addition to two ceramic vessels, an openwork gripping buckle was part of the inventory that was still preserved. Two of four presumably earlier grave slabs, which were also found under the church, pass on the Germanic names "Alfruc" and "Gerhard". The burial at the Martinus Church indicates a surviving Romanesque tradition in early medieval Qualburg.

Furnishing

In the vicinity of the church include a baptismal font from the 14th century, from Namur - limestone is made. A wooden sculpture of St. Mary from the early 15th century shows clear Parisian influences of courtly handicraft.

In the high altar, three ornamented memorial stones from the 10th century and one stone from the Franconian era were built.

The pointed church tower is 58 m high.

Monument protection

The area of the church is a ground monument according to the law for the protection and care of monuments in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Monument Protection Act - DSchG) . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
