The Sankt Matthias Church in Achim in the Lower Saxony  district of Verden is a Roman Catholic parish church . Your parish also includes the Catholic parish center St. Paulus in neighboring Oyten . The community is part of the Verden deanery in the Hildesheim diocese .

history

The parish emerged from the former mission congregation Hemelingen -Land, which was founded in 1930 in the area of ​​the old district of Achim. After the end of the Second World War , with the arrival of many Catholic refugees and displaced persons, the need for a local church arose. Therefore, a former Hitler Youth home became the first Catholic branch church in Achim since the Reformation . In 1955 the foundation stone for today's church in the functional style of the 1950s was laid in Meislahnstrasse - the topping-out ceremony was celebrated in the same year. The design came from Josef Fehlig . A gable turret with church bells belongs to the single-nave building . In 1956 a separate parish was established, which has had its current name since 1965. In 1997, the St. Paulus Community Center in Oyten was founded as a branch.

The catchment area of ​​the municipality today includes the city of Achim, the municipalities of Oyten and Ottersberg , the western part of the municipality of Langwedel and the municipalities of Thedinghausen , Riede and Emtinghausen .

Church life

In addition to the former refugees and their descendants, significant groups within the community are repatriates from Poland and the former Soviet Union , immigrants from southern and western Germany and community members of Italian , Croatian and British origin (as of 2013).
