St. Michael in Hellingen

The Evangelical Lutheran parish church of St. Michael in Hellingen , a district of the city of Heldburg in the Hildburghausen district ( Thuringia ) was inaugurated on November 1, 1793.

Building history

The church stands on a hill with the rectory and the gatehouse of the formerly fortified churchyard. In the middle of the 16th century there was a small church built in the late Gothic style, which was dedicated to the Archangel Michael . At the end of the 18th century a new margrave-style church, about 22 meters long and eleven meters wide, was built in its place , which was consecrated on November 1, 1793. The lower part of the old church tower was preserved. Since then, it has housed the five-meter-long and equally wide sacristy that was the chancel in the old church. The light and bright interior of the church is neo-classical and has a two-storey gallery on three sides . On the east side there is the ancient altar and above it the pulpit in the form of a swallow's nest. The pulpit parapet is structured by vertical strips with goblets. On the one hand, command panels symbolize the Old Testament and on the other hand, the cross, Bible and chalice symbolize the New Testament . The sound cover of the pulpit is decorated with tassel hangings and a boy holding strands of leaves. The organ forms the upper end on the east side . In 1866 the Leipzig organ building company Hildebrandt installed an organ with 20 registers, which the Schmiedefeld master organ builder Theodor Kühn rebuilt in 1893 . It has 18 stops on two manuals and a pedal .

The name of God Yahweh from the Old Testament is written in Hebrew letters above the main portal, which the visitor reaches after passing the gatehouse and the cemetery. Four cast iron bells, which were cast in 1919, hang in the church tower.
