history

In August 1963, a new residential complex with 1000 new apartments was built in Amberg, called the “Demonstrative Program” (“D Program”). A branch of the mother parish of St. Martin was founded in 1965 for the residential area ; Services initially took place in an emergency church . In January 1968, a building competition for a church center was advertised, in which the architect Baur from Weiden prevailed. Construction began on July 21, 1969. The foundation stone was laid at the beginning of November 1969. On September 27, 1970, the new church was consecrated by Bishop Rudolf Graber and the branch was elevated to an independent parish.

On July 8, 1972, the St. Michael kindergarten was added to the community center.

architecture

Liturgy forms spaces

The decidedly simple architecture should be understood as a description of the liturgy as given in the liturgy constitution of the Second Vatican Council. Concise and transparent, with the sheen of noble simplicity. It embodies the spirit of departure, overcomes centuries-old structures. Their simple rooms and building materials still look radical today.

With the decisions of the Second Vatican Council, the congregation literally moved closer to the sanctuary. The equipment for liturgical use was arranged in the chancel on a low podium in such a way that it enabled communication between the congregation and the clergy. The priest celebrating at the free-standing altar forms a semicircle with the community around him. The tabernacle with the host is separated from the altar.

The church building in its unadorned and modernity takes into account the conviction of the architects in order to express the supposedly different of the religious, the supposedly contrary to the normal life of the modern person; a tendency that can be seen in many modern church buildings after the Second Vatican Council. The church has a free-standing steeple (so-called campanile ).

Furnishing

The Weiden artist Günther Mauermann created a frieze from clay tablets in 1983 , showing God's way of salvation with humanity from creation to the returning Christ. The goal of life and history is the realization of the kingdom of God, thus the twelfth station on the road to salvation.

The altar area and the baptismal font were built with travertine (travertine marble).

Church interior

The main room of the church is a square hall with a side length of 20 meters and a height of 14 meters. The floor is covered with travertine marble. The walls are partly clad with perforated bricks and partly in exposed concrete. The wall behind the altar consists of a Last Supper cast from concrete. The ceiling consists of prestressed concrete and 25 prefabricated square concrete cassettes. Daylight enters through nine rectangular domes in the coffered ceiling above the altar area and a narrow ribbon of windows under the ceiling.

The altar area is surrounded by a semicircle of benches for the congregation. The main hall is surrounded on all four sides by a lower, only four meter high room part; the walls of the main hall rest alone on a pillar in each of the four corners. The walls of the surrounding low room sections are clad with bricks, the ceilings with wood. A side aisle adjoins the right part of the room, which serves as a weekday church. On the back wall next to the entrance is the Lady Chapel.

The building is part of an ensemble of kindergarten, rectory and rectory.

The parish of St. Michael has around 2800 parish members (as of 2018). In addition to the “D program”, the residential complex on Liebengrabenweg, the area of the former Ritter-von-Möhl barracks (later US base Pond Barracks ), the district of Gailoh and Martinshöhe 2 belong to the parish area.
