The Roman Catholic cemetery chapel of St. Michael von Beratzhausen is located north of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul and belongs to the Laaber dean's office .

history

Since a coat of arms of the Stauffer zu Ehrenfels can be seen in the choir and these only came into the possession of Beratzhausen in 1335, the time of construction of the chapel cannot be assumed before the mid-14th century.

The chapel was not particularly valued at times. In a visitation report by von Tettelbach from 1584 it says: “They want to clear the Church of St. Michael and make an apartment in it for the sacristan.” This disdain has continued in recent times, it was used as a sick bed, makeshift morgue and storage room for used church equipment. Pastor Fichtl wanted to transform the chapel into a youth home after the Second World War . For this purpose, the old Gothic ceiling was knocked out and replaced with a wooden ceiling. Ultimately, this plan could not be implemented. Later it was to become a war memorial chapel; This plan also failed because the market community did not agree to make a distinction between Catholic and Protestant fallen.

In 1964 the chapel was renovated according to the preservation criteria and is now recognized as historically and artistically valuable.

Construction

The two-story chapel is a Gothic structure. It has a not retracted choir (built around 1440) made of five octagonal sides. The nave has a flat roof. The choir has a star vault with a keystone of the Stauffer zu Ehrenfels. The Stauffer coat of arms can also be found on the middle of the coat of arms shields at one of the beginnings of the vault. The hollow profiled ribs sit on the choir arch on profiled consoles. An angel with a banner, another strongly entwined banner, tendrils and a coat of arms console serve as the beginning of the vault.

The chapel has five windows with tracery, on the south side of the nave is a pointed arched door. There was an ossuary under the chapel . This can be reached via a staircase leading down from the outside. The ossuary was filled with skulls and bones of the dead until 1964. These remains were removed by the community and buried in a cellar-like crypt below the morgue. The entrance was walled up.

Interior

On the altar there are two wooden figures depicting St. Peter and St. Representing Michael with a 15th century flaming sword. On the south side there is a crucifix painted on the outside as a stone relief from the end of the 14th century.
