Church of St Michael in Gera-Pforten

The Protestant village church of St. Michael is located in the Pforten district of the independent city of Gera in Thuringia .

history

Around 1632 there was a chapel near the Pforten manor .

The growing population around 1900 and the associated city expansion made a larger church necessary. In 1939, today's church was built as an emergency church. At the first consecration, the German Christians put a swastika on the roof turret instead of a Christian cross. The NSDAP protested against this in an original way and demanded the removal of the swastika. On September 29, 1945 the church “St. Michael ” consecrated again because the first consecration was no longer recognized.

In 1951 the four-sided, plain plastered and dominating bell tower with a flat tent roof and a crowning cross was built .

In 2005 the tower cross was renewed and the roof re-covered.

The church belongs to the parish of Gera and is used for evening services.

Furnishing

In the apse there is a metal sculpture by the Gera artist Herbert Enke, which depicts the Archangel Michael. The bell from 1918 from the Ulrich workshop in Apolda is the oldest piece of equipment.
