The Protestant Church of St. Nicolai is located in Vogelsdorf , a district of the Huy community in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish at Huy the church district Halberstadt of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

The main attraction of Vogelsdorf is the church of St. Nicolai, which has a building structure, especially the tower, from the Romanesque period before Vogelsdorf was first mentioned in 1138. The interior of the church was destroyed by fire during the Thirty Years War in 1641. In 1717 the nave was enlarged, which is now indicated by an inscription behind the altar.

In 1842 the church was expanded again. This time a vestibule was added in the entrance area with a staircase to the church galleries. A motto was chiseled into the door frame above the entrance door. In 2018, the renovation of the church and its expansion into a church-communal meeting place on behalf of the Evangelical parish of St. Nicolai zu Vogelsdorf by the denk'mal architects in Magdeburg began. The construction work should be completed in 2021.

Interior

The renovation of the interior of the church took place after the fire of 1641. Particularly noteworthy are the elders' stalls from this time with various pictures, including of Peter and the Evangelists, as well as information about the founder of the stalls. In 1724 the church received a baroque altar, surrounded by two evangelists and crowned by the risen Jesus Christ . A baroque pulpit with a sound cover was also installed. After a fire broke out again at the end of the 19th century, which had sooty the interior of the church, Adolf Rettelbusch repainted the interior in 1897.

The church organ dates from 1859 and was made by Richard Voigt from Halberstadt. The two bells were cast in 1467 and 1715.

Monument protection

The Church of St. Nicolai in Vogelsdorf is in the list of cultural monuments in Huy under registration number 094 0026 as cultural monuments of the community Huy in the monument register of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, which is based on the Monument Protection Act of October 21, 1991 by the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology of Saxony-Anhalt and has been continuously updated since then.
