St. Nikolaus (in the local dialect Nikloos ) is a district of the community Großrosseln in the Saarland regional association Saarbrücken . Until the end of 1973 St. Nikolaus was an independent community.

history

The place is considered the oldest settlement in the Warndt . In 1270 a chapel was built near the hunting lodge of the Counts of Saarbrücken . Even Emperor Barbarossa was hunting guest. Numerous believers came as pilgrims to "St. Nicholas" .

The chapel was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . At the beginning of the 18th century St. Nicholas was settled again.

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Sankt Nikolaus was assigned to the municipality of Großrosseln on January 1, 1974.

Christmas post office

Since 1966 there has been a St. Nicholas post office every December , which answers more than 26,500 letters "to St. Nicholas" on a voluntary basis. A year later, a special postmark is used for the first time for this occasion. From December 5th to 6th, the Nikolaus Christmas Market will take place in front of the Nikolaus Post Office on Nikolausplatz. On December 5th there is a St. Nicholas reception followed by a children's gift giving every child a St. Nicholas cone that they fill themselves.
