The Catholic St. Nicholas Church is a church building in Wulmeringhausen , a district of Olsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The previous church was the St. Nicholas Chapel, built in 1735. It was nine meters long and four meters wide. It was built with clay from local rubble stone . In this chapel the pastor of Assinghausen read a mass once a week, almost always on Wednesday. The residents of Wulmeringhausen had to visit the church in Assinghausen for the Sunday service. In 1920 Wulmeringhausen became a branch community with its own clergyman. Due to a lack of space, the chapel was expanded to include an emergency annex. Part of the old chapel was transferred to the new one as the choir . Concrete blocks were poured from the rubble from the heaps of the former zinc mine and the chapel was raised with them. The resulting zinc sulphate ate away at the concrete blocks, after only 32 years the building was ready for demolition. On June 20, 1952, before the demolition took place a few days later, one last service was celebrated. The foundation stone for the Nikolauskirche was laid on August 24, 1952. The architect was Alfred Kalmbacher from Dortmund. An organ was installed in November 1955 by the Werler organ building company Gebrüder Stockmann . The interior was renovated in 1971.
