Walther Björkman

Walther Björkman , complete Johannes Walther Oscar Emanuel Björkman (born June 19, 1896 in Lübeck , † November 24, 1996 in Uppsala ) was a German - Swedish orientalist .

Life

Björkman was the son of the teacher and author Carl Viktor Emanuel Björkman (1868–1931), who came from Sweden to Lübeck, and his German wife, the writer Marie Henriette, née. Schlikau. He attended the Katharineum in Lübeck and graduated from high school here in 1915. As a Swedish citizen, he did not take part in the First World War as a soldier . He studied oriental studies at the universities of Bonn, Kiel and Munich and was awarded a doctorate in 1919 in Kiel with a dissertation on Ofen (Buda) during the Turkish period. phil. PhD.

He then became an assistant at the newly founded University of Hamburg . In 1921 he became a German citizen. In 1927 he was appointed lecturer in Islamic studies in Hamburg . In 1929 he moved to the University of Berlin as a professor of Arabic , where he also taught Islamic studies from 1930. In 1942 he became an adjunct professor of Arabic and in 1944 he went to the University of Breslau as a professor of Turkish Studies .

After the end of the war he fled to the west and then went to Sweden . At Uppsala University he was appointed lecturer in Turkish languages ​​in 1951 and took on the Swedish citizenship again. From 1953 to 1959 he lived and worked in Ankara as a professor for classical oriental languages ​​at the University of Ankara . In 1959 he returned to his old position as a lecturer for Turkish languages ​​in Uppsala and stayed here until his retirement in 1963.
