The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus is one of the three oldest churches in Düsseldorf and is located in the Himmelgeist district . The parish of the same name belongs to the pastoral care unit of Düsseldorfer Rheinbogen.

history

The first church in Himmelgeist was mentioned in a document in 904. It was a branch church of the Kaiserswerth monastery and was a predecessor of today's church. This was essentially built in the 11th century and in the late Romantic style, initially without a tower and without a choir. In the 12th century the church was expanded to include the choir and the main apse. The tower was finally added in the 13th century. In the 14th century the smaller and in the 15th century the larger of the two sacrament houses were added. At the beginning of the 20th century, three old church bells existed and were in use. The oldest bell had the year of casting 1454 and the other two were from 1730. After a lightning strike in 1741 the tower had to be restored. The interior was restored by Rincklage in 1867. The sacristy was expanded in the 19th century.

The tower was again badly damaged by the Second World War , so that a hurricane in December 1945 caused the tower to crash. The complete renovation lasted until 1967. In 1974 the church was extensively renovated.

architecture

St. Nikolaus is a Romanesque three-nave pillar basilica from the 11th century with three apses. The choir from the 12th century is also Romanesque and its rib-free cross vault rests on Romanesque three-quarter columns. The tower was later built into the church. He cuts through the arches of the third arcade. The ceiling of the main nave is an early Gothic rib vault that was built at the same time as the tower was built. The Romanesque windows in the upper storey are walled up. The side aisles have a ridge vault. Two sacrament houses are built into the choir. The glass windows are from the years 1967/68 by Franz Pauli.

organ

The organ was built in 1938 by the organ builder Johannes Klais (Bonn). The Kegelladen instrument has 17 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are electric.
