St. Nicholas in Rath

St. Nikolaus is a chapel in the Rath district of Nörvenich .

The chapel existed before the village was first mentioned. Architectural historians date the church building to the 12th or 13th century. The church was first mentioned in 1550, 1559 and 1583 during the church visits at the time . Rath belonged to the parish of Nörvenich since 1177 .

The church was badly damaged in the Thirty Years War . The destruction in the place was so severe that nobody lived there for five years. In 1656 the chapel was restored.

In 1841 the small church was extended to the west. At that time the chapel was devoid of any facility. The technically skilled Rector Johann Claes himself made the benches, a communion bench and both a sermon and confessional.

In 1973 the church was expanded again. At the same time, the facility was extensively expanded.

The church was registered on March 21, 1985 in the monument list of the municipality of Nörvenich under No. 67.
