location

The church building is located on the western outskirts of Eschweiler via Feld on Heribertstrasse (L 263). The old cemetery is on the opposite side of the street.

history

A church in Eschweiler above Feld was first mentioned in writing in a document dated April 1, 1003. It states that Archbishop Heribertus of Cologne gave the newly built Deutz Abbey church and courtyard in Eschweiler over Feld to support the monastery. Thus, before 1003 the church of Eschweiler over Feld was an episcopal own church , which suggests a very old age. It can be assumed that Eschweiler via Feld was already an independent parish at that time . Until 1630, Benedictine monks from Deutz Abbey placed the pastors in Eschweiler above field. It was not until 1630 that secular clergymen were appointed pastors .

In 1739 the Provost of Cologne claimed the right of collation over the parish church, which the Deutz Abbey had been entitled to since 1003. However, the Abbot of Deutz was able to prove to him that he did not have this right, which means that Deutz Abbey remained a collator . This right did not expire until the French era and the abbey was dissolved in 1804.

On January 1, 1966, the parish area was enlarged by re-paring around the Ollesheim branch with the Termeline Chapel and the Kauweiler estate, which previously belonged to the Nörvenich parish.

On January 1, 2010, the parish of St. Heribert was dissolved after around 1000 years and merged with the parishes of Binsfeld , Frauwüllesheim , Hochkirchen , Nörvenich, Rath and Wissersheim, which were also dissolved at the same time, to form the new large parish of St. Josef.

Building history

The previous churches of today's church were opposite in the old cemetery. Nothing is known about the church mentioned in 1003. Probably a few centuries later a Romanesque church was built on the same site , which had to be supported by buttresses in 1696 . Around 1500 the choir was rebuilt in Gothic style and in 1854 a new sacristy was added. The church only got an organ in 1837 . But it was in need of repair as early as 1859 and had to be repaired by the Kalscheuer organ building workshop in Nörvenich. The old pulpit was replaced by a new one in 1861.

The old church was built of brick and covered with slate . There were three bells in the tower . The ship had a flat ceiling and small wooden-framed windows. On either side of the main altar were the statues of St. Heribert , the main patron, and St. Agatha . The area of the church was about 75 m².

At the end of the 19th century, the church had become too small for the 603 residents who were already living there, and it was decided to build a new parish church. A plot of land opposite the old parish church on the other side of the street was chosen as the building site. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 23 September 1894. Two years later, the new church was completed and was on May 6, 1896 inaugurated be. The old church was then torn down. The plans for the new church were drawn up by the Cologne architect Theodor Roß . The costs totaled 51,300 marks.
