Chapel of St. Pancras

The Roman Catholic Chapel of St. Pankratius is a listed church building in Brabecke , a district of Schmallenberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The building is one of the oldest churches in the Sauerland . The church stands in the middle of the village on a cemetery and is characteristic of the town. The Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe classifies the church and the preservation of the proportions as particularly worthwhile.

History and architecture

Originally the church was under the patronage of Saints Martin and Vincentius; the change to Pankratius took place before 1618. The Romanesque church was first mentioned in 1230. The building was erected in the 12th century as a two-bay hall church with a retracted rectangular choir in rubble stone. The west tower with corner blocks was built up from 1754 to 1757; the sacristy was added in 1957. The choir arch is decorated with figures in shell niches. On the west side of the interior there is a gallery . The late Romanesque paintings in the interior are remarkable . Vine friezes , trees of life and mythical animals can be seen in the vaults . The keystones are also painted. The fragments uncovered in 1948 were then supplemented or renewed according to findings. An extensive renovation was completed in 1992. The floor was re-laid, the facade restored and the church square redesigned.

Furnishing

  • The altarpiece with carved figures of saints was built in 1746 by Johann Frohen from Brilon and fundamentally changed in 1757 by Wilhelm Sinn from Fredeburg.
  • The west gallery is decorated with stuccoed fruit hangings that were installed in the second half of the 17th century.
