Seehausen (Börde), St. Paul's Church

The Romanesque church of St. Paul (also St. Peter and Paul ) in Seehausen is the oldest church on the Magdeburg Börde . It belongs to the southern route of the Romanesque Road in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The church, first mentioned in 1148 as the Archdeaconate Church of the Diocese of Verden , is a Romanesque village church typical of the region, which was built from rubble stones. The west transverse tower has eight large arched, domed acoustic arcades . A single nave nave , a rectangular choir and a semicircular apse adjoin the west tower . On the south side of the nave there is a portal with a stepped garment , the quarter columns of which have capitals with plant ornaments. Work on the Paulskirche took place in the 16th and 17th centuries. Except for a few windows, the external appearance was not changed. A walled up portal on the west side refers to a previous building from the year 830, which Bishop Hildegrim von Halberstadt is said to have commissioned. In 2020 the church was closed due to the risk of the tower collapsing. A repair is planned after the completion of the renovation of the south side of the other church in Seehausen, the St. Laurentius Church , which has been rebuilt from a ruinous state since 1991.
