Saint Paul

St. Paul is a Roman Catholic church on Bornscheuerstraße on Hilgershöhe in Wuppertal - Langerfeld .

Building description

The church is a simple, brutalist - modern church made of exposed and exposed concrete . The building consists of several cube-shaped elements, the outer walls of which are all structured by several horizontally running indentations. The church, built on a slope, stands on a square cube with a side length of thirty meters. The east-facing choir is joined to the north by the bell tower, which is the only element that clearly towers over the building ensemble. In front of the church hall, which is only fifteen meters long but twenty meters wide, is an entrance hall consisting of two cube-shaped elements.

The interior is also unplastered, but through clever use of the incidence of light reveals a completely different mood than the external impression suggests. The windows extend as a comprehensive, narrow band around the entire transept, while the choir and main nave are divided by narrow, horizontal windows. The church hall is kept simple, only the figure of the apostle Peter sets a colorful accent. The altar is only slightly raised almost in the middle of the room and thus illustrates the proximity to the community following the Second Vatican Council . Behind him, the tabernacle is the only element made of white alabaster that clearly stands out from the rest of the interior. The only wooden design element is a figure of Mary from the 15th century next to the altar.

history

It was not until the 1960s that the number of Catholics living in Langerfeld north of the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway line increased sharply. These were looked after by the parish of Sankt Raphael until 1970 , which, however, was very cumbersome for the pastors due to the geographical distance. Shortly after receiving a permit to build our own branch church, construction work began on a church which, following the statements of the Second Vatican Council , was to be the first church in Wuppertal to represent a new type of church that was detached from old structures. On March 21, 1973 the new church, including the parish hall and kindergarten, was inaugurated.

The church is part of the parish community Wupperbogen Ost together with the churches of Sankt Raphael, Sankt Elisabeth / Sankt Petrus and Sankt Maria Magdalena
