The St. Peter's branch church is visible from afar on the southeastern tip of the Petersberg above Friesach . It is a Roman Catholic branch church of the parish church of Saint Bartolomew .

history

The first documentary mention comes from the year 1130. The previous building of the church was a chapel built into the outer ring of the castle. Until the Josephine parish regulation at the end of the 18th century, the church had the status of a parish church.

Building

The oldest part of St. Peter's Church is the massive choir square with apse built in the first half of the 13th century . The short and wide nave was built at the end of the 13th century. In the west of the nave there is an open vestibule with a pent roof on pillars. To the south of the choir square is the Gothic sacristy with a pult roof. A small bell tower from 1798 rises above the choir square and was renewed in 1846. The church is entered through a round arched portal with stone framing made of Spolia . These probably come from the previous chapel.

The interior surprises with great modesty. Even in the Baroque era, the flat ceiling of the nave was only structured by simple stucco frames. A wooden gallery from the 19th century has moved in to the west. On the north side, the nave wall is broken through by two small round arched funnel windows, on the south side by a small round arched funnel window above the gallery and a large late medieval pointed arch window. A strong, round-arched triumphal arch with Romanesque spire profiles leads to the choir square with a deep choir-like apse. A modern groin vault spans the choir. The sacraments niche with a pointed arched house framing was set into the wall in the 14th century, the wrought iron grille with rosette decoration was attached at the beginning of the 19th century. The floor of the choir square is two steps higher than the nave and the apse is one step higher than the choir square.

Facility

In the apse is the baroque, black and gold main altar from 1670/80. The aedicule altar with cartilage cheeks stands on a small base and has a small aedicule with volutes as a top . The main picture flanked with columns shows the kneeling Peter with the attribute of the rooster. God the Father can be seen in the top picture.

The northern side altar with cartilage, which was built around the same time, deserves a lot of attention, as it integrates Gothic panel paintings by the painter Melchior von Sankt Paul from 1525. In the main picture, the Holy Kinship is shown as a large group of figures. The top picture and the side panels show scenes from the legend of Joachim and Anna ; on the left the rejection of Joachim's sacrifice can be seen, in the essay Joachim in the desert and the meeting of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate, on the right the birth of Mary.

The southern side altar, created around 1680, shows the bishops Vitalis and probably Thiemo in the middle picture . Above it is an Ecce Homo depiction. There are two pyramid-shaped reliquary containers on the altar canteen .

The pulpit with a rectangular pulpit with ornamental, partly renewed stencil carvings also dates from around 1680. The painting on the back wall of the pulpit, depicting Peter, is labeled "Ex voto / Peter Rumpel / 1683".

Two post-Gothic statues of the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul, made around 1600, flank the triumphal arch.

The church has two paintings in rococo cartouches with depictions from the life of St. Nepomuk , one depicting the good shepherd, another depicting the martyrdom of St. Andrew and the main picture. On the gallery hangs a picture of St. Barbara in a baroque frame, which is labeled "Kolb 1846".
