Vitalis († October 20 before 728) was from 716 as the successor of St. Rupert Bishop in Salzburg and Abbot of the St. Peter Monastery . He is considered the "apostle of the Pinzgau region ."

Life

Vitalis presumably continued Rupert's missionary work, especially in Pinzgau , which is now part of Salzburg , and founded several monk cells in Zell am See for this purpose . According to ecclesiastical tradition, he was an extremely conscientious pastor who was very much valued by his people. Under his rule, Salzburg received the town of Henndorf and the woods up to the Fischach from the Bavarian Duke Hugbert .

The fraternization book of the St. Peter monastery brought before Vitalis, as abbot of the St. Peter monastery, Abbot Anzogolus, which agrees with the fact that Rupert did not die in Salzburg, but probably in Worms. It remains unclear, however, why five abbots appear before Bishop John I in St. Peter, but only two of them were also bishops (Abbot Anzogolus, Abbot Bishop Vitalis, Abbot Sauolus, Abbot Izzio and Abbot Bishop Flobigris). Maybe those abbots who are not as were abbotbishop be designated abbot , who had only a short time as a bishop administrators operate.

Vitalis is considered the patron saint of the Pinzgau region ("Apostle of the Pinzgau region"), children and pregnant women. His grave slab, which exists today in St. Peter's Abbey, was made in 1497, and the site received its current appearance in 1762. According to a legend, the lily miracle goes back to him, which says that a lily grew out of a stone. In art he is represented with a heart and a lily.

The canonical process for Vitalis was first initiated between 1459 and 1462, but the canonization was never completed. An examination carried out in 1519 also failed to achieve its goal. In 1628, Pope Urban VIII finally allowed the bishop to be worshiped in the diocese of Salzburg . His feast day is October 20th .
