Parish Church of St. Peter

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter is a listed church building in Kettwig , a district of Essen .

History and architecture

The church is the first church of the Kettwig Catholics after the Reformation. Before that, the faithful were looked after by the abbey church in Werden . The striking church tower on the edge of Kettwig's old town, together with the medieval tower of the Protestant church on the market, is a defining feature of the town. The church belongs to the parish of St. Peter and Laurentius and thus to the northernmost part of the Archdiocese of Cologne .

The building is located away from the town center, which formerly consisted mainly of factory workers in the textile industry. The classicist hall with a flat ceiling and gable roof was built from 1829 to 1830 according to plans by Otto von Gloeden , which were revised by Adolph von Vagedes and slightly corrected by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The rectangular choir was included in the rectangular floor plan . There are galleries above the choir adjoining rooms . The protruding square west tower was completed in 1886 with a neo-baroque dome and a lantern . Originally, the building , standing over a quarry stone base, was brick-view ; it was plastered in the late 19th century. The arched windows are decorated with cast iron tracery .

Furnishing

The baroque high altar from around 1700 comes from the Katharinenkloster in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim . The altarpiece with the depiction of the Man of Sorrows was painted around 1600 and used during the renovation from 1975 to 1979. The baroque side altars from the beginning of the 18th century were matched in color to the high altar from 1975 to 1979.

The pulpit , the confessionals and the stalls in simple classical forms were made during the construction of the church. For the organ from 1982 an organ from 1754 from Alt St. Martin in Düsseldorf-Bilk was used as a Rückpositiv . The case was re-alignment on the altars taken .
