St. Peter am See (Hunswinkel)
St. Peter am See was a Catholic church directly above the banks of the Listertalsperre in Valbert- Hunswinkel , a small district of Meinerzhagen in the Sauerland , about 20 kilometers from the main town.
The patronage of St. Peter am See is unique in Germany with this name. It is reminiscent of the place of activity of the Galilean fisherman Peter not only in name, but also with the location on the Listersee. The church rises above the lake like a ship's bow.
The church was a branch church of the parish of St. Christopherus in Valbert and serves not only the local parish , but above all as a holiday church for the pastoral care of holidaymakers and guests of the large camping and holiday home areas in the recreation area on Bigge and Listersee .
In the future concept of the diocese of Essen , St. Peter am See is shown as another church . This means that the diocese will not provide financial or human resources to maintain it in the future. A development association , which had been founded in the meantime, took care of the preservation, but could not cope with the increasing need for renovation that was becoming apparent.
Regular services were held until 2009, in 2011 the church building was profaned and in 2015 it was sold together with the rectory.
History and architecture
The church of St. Peter am See is a design by the Cologne architect Hans Schilling . Cathedral Chapter Martin Lütteken laid the foundation stone in October 1964, and it was designated in 1966 by Prelate Rudolf Dietrich.
The church building in modern architectural style has a parabolic floor plan with the altar in focus. With the parabolic shape, the archetype of the church builder Rudolf Schwarz , called the holy litter , was taken up. The parable opens from the altar to the world and surrounds the assembled community like a protective cloak. To keep the parabola open, a large glass wall was placed between the two legs at the end of the building. It keeps out wind and weather, but preserves the openness of the church to the world for the eyes and the feeling . The focal point of the parable is the altar.
The sculptural extensions and installations (often baptismal chapels, sacrament chapels, stairwells) are also characteristic of Hans Schilling's churches. In St. Peter am See it is the semicircular confessional chapel that grows higher up from the church as a fully round bell tower .
The solidarity between the small St. Peter's Church and its great role models are already shown by the two door handles on the entrance portal: the left represents the ship of the fisherman and apostle Peter on the Sea of Galilee . The right shows the large St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
The church has a parish hall and a pastorate .
local community
St. Peter am See was a branch parish of the parish of St. Christopherus in Meinerzhagen-Valbert ; due to the low number of Catholics in Hunswinkel, parish life was mainly in Valbert. Only about 150 Catholics are registered with their primary residence in the parish of St. Peter am See , the majority of the worshipers - especially in summer - the regular weekend vacationers.
The community belonged to the parish of St. Maria Immakulata Meinerzhagen / Kirspe in the district dean of Altena / Lüdenscheid in the diocese of Essen .
Trivia
The Protestant community of Valbert also had a church in Hunswinkel, but sold it in 2004.
