history

Previous construction

The St. Peter and Paul Church stands on the site of a previous building built in 1861. The cornerstone of this first church, which was partly built on the site of the former Zur golden Eule inn , was laid on May 23, 1861. A first service was celebrated on October 18, 1861, the actual consecration by Bishop Konrad Martin from Paderborn on August 7, 1862. The community was run as an independent church community. From July 13, 1863, Peter and Paul had been the patron saints of the Church.

The church, which was initially built without a tower, was then given a steeple in 1896/97 with a ringing of three bells. Later an organ by the organ builder Emil Heerwagen from Klosterhäseler was installed. The two big bells were delivered to the armaments industry during World War I , and the third bell later also disappeared for an unclear reason. On November 10th, the Ulrich Brothers bell foundry from Apolda delivered a new bell. The bell, tuned to tone c2, was consecrated on November 11th in the name of the Holy Family .

Today's church

After the Second World War , the old church turned out to be too small, probably also due to Catholic refugees. It was therefore decided to demolish the church and build a larger new building. The last service in the old building took place on May 27, 1957. A small chapel was set up in the rectory for the construction period.

On June 19, 1957, the foundation stone was laid for the new building designed by Pastor Huppertz and the Bitterfeld architect Reuter. Due to the shortage of building materials in the GDR, the authorities ordered a building freeze on February 26th, which was soon lifted. The stones from the previous building were largely used as building material anyway. Support came from the faithful and from the Archdiocese of Paderborn, which also provided a steel frame.

In addition, the casting of another bell had been commissioned. The bell, tuned to tone A1, bears the name of Saint Heinrich II / Saint Elisabeth .

On June 30, 1962, Auxiliary Bishop Friedrich Maria Rintelen consecrated today's church building. In 1985 the church roof had to be renewed. In 1986 the interior was renovated and changed in color. Kitchen and toilets were also added. To complete the ringing, a third bell was commissioned in Passau and the bell cage was renovated. On November 10, 2002, the new Peter and Paul bell was consecrated . The bell tuned to tone g1 bears the inscription: Petrus et Paulus, principes apostolorum et huius ecclesiae et urbis patroni; intercedite pro nobis (German: Petrus and Paul, princes of the apostles, patrons of this church and city; pray for us ).
