history

St. Peter and Paul, Obernau

A chapel was first mentioned in Obernau in 1331. It was consecrated to the "Blessed Virgin Mary " and was looked after by the parish of St. Petrus in Remmingsheim . This chaplaincy was separated from this parish in 1467 and transferred to the Canons of St. Moriz , where it remained until its dissolution in 1806.

Already at the end of the 18th century the dilapidation of the old chapel was lamented. It was demolished in 1805 and rebuilt in the same year according to plans by Johann Nepomuk Hug from Günzburg . There are no more remains of the old chapel. Today's church is a light, early classicist building with a strongly indented, rectangular choir in the southeast. The main facade on the north-west side is emphasized by a round arched stone portal and the tower structure with a small pyramid roof. Three bells are hung in the tower, the oldest from 1452, the other two from 1952.

The Obernau Church was designated by Provost Stein von St. Moriz. After the abbey was dissolved, Obernau received its own parish. The actual church consecration could only take place after the establishment of the new diocese Rottenburg on October 21, 1830 by Bishop Johann Baptist von Keller . It was dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul .

Interior

Since the community was poor, it received some items of equipment from the dissolved monastery churches in Rottenburg. Above the left side altar is a figure of the crowned Maria Immaculata from 1765 by the Rottenburg sculptor Johann Maria Staiger. From the former St. Joseph's Church of the Rottenburg Jesuit College come two altar leaves depicting St. Aloisius of Gonzaga and St. Stanislaus Kostka show. This picture was painted by Christian Thomas Scheffler SJ 1726, a student of Cosma Damian Asam . The baroque confessional, however, comes from the Rottenburg Carmelite monastery .

A neo-Gothic crucifixion group with the church patrons was set up in the choir, which formed the center of the high altar from 1891, which was later largely destroyed again. During a major renovation in 1940, the choir arch was removed and the ceiling of the nave and choir stuccoed and painted by Johannes Wohlfahrt (1900–1975). The ceiling fresco in the choir shows the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, the one in the nave shows the Last Judgment.
