St. Peter and Paul is the Evangelical Lutheran church in the town of Steinach in the Thuringian district of Sonneberg . The church was consecrated on December 3, 1899.

history

The school and prayer house was inaugurated in 1652. In 1660 Ober- and Untersteinach received their own pastor and the cemetery was laid out. The first church was built in the middle between the two places in a 21-year construction period. It was inaugurated on August 23, 1705. In 1720 an organ was purchased . In 1894 the first church was demolished because it was in disrepair .

Today's church was built in 1898/1899 according to plans by the well-known Berlin architect Franz Schwechten at a new location, on a slope above the Steinach floodplain . Duke Georg II , who significantly influenced the location and the design, bore three quarters of the total costs . The inauguration took place on August 20, 1899. In 1924 the church got electric light and in 1970 an electric bell.

In 1956, damage led to a partial revision of the painting by the painter Carl from Poppenwind . In 1986 the interior of the room was redesigned by the Gera restorer Kurt Thümmler and the church was consecrated in the name of St. Peter and Paul. Extensive renovation measures were carried out at the beginning of the 21st century.

architecture

The neo-Romanesque basilica has an outer wall made of slate, which is structured by sandstone elements. In the northeast there is a semicircular apse and on the opposite side a four-storey tower with a pointed spire and the main portal with vestibule and arcades . In addition to the main nave, there is a side aisle in the north-west and a side aisle in the south-east. The main nave has a wooden ceiling with a hanging structure , which is decorated with paintings by Adolf Quensen . The chancel was originally painted ornamentally and figuratively by Quensen. The glass paintings in the three apse windows were made by Alexander Linnemann . The organ on the south-western gallery comes from Wilhelm Sauer .

Between 1899 and 1901, the community had the neo-Romanesque south school built in the vicinity of the church, also based on a design by Schwechten. The school building and the church share a terraced enclosure made of greywacke and together form an ensemble of outstanding architectural quality.
