Poppenwind is a district of Auengrund in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .

Poppenwind is located south of the federal highway 73 and is covered by the county road 526. The Hildburghausen Forest borders to the southwest . The village lies on the slope of the Solaberg in meadows and fields as well as in forests.
history
Poppenwind (Boppen winds) was founded in the 6./7. Century. The village was first mentioned in documents from 1288-1315. The name of the place is said to have been borrowed from Count Poppo, a Count of Henneberg . A castrum (castle) stood on the so-called Vogelherd in the area even before the first documentary mention of the place. After its destruction in 1672, the Brno church was built from its stones . The village was laid out in a horseshoe shape. The village square, horse pond and the village linden, which was later planted as imperial linden, are in the middle.
The Thirty Years War also left its mark. The traditional costumes in the village have an ethnological background. There was also a 30 to 40 meter wide border between the Henneberg and Saxon areas, the Saxon Landwehr . After the Second World War and until 1990, the inner-German border existed a few kilometers from this . A school was built in 1842, followed by another in 1930; from 1950 the children of the village started school in Brattendorf . In 1996 the community of Auengrund was founded, which the village also joined.
