Merbelsrod is a district of the municipality of Auengrund in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .

Merbelsrod is located northwest of Brattendorf in a gentle high trough of the Wachberg in a hilly rural area. Meadows and fields as well as forests alternate in the area . The corridor is 520-580 meters above sea level and has many slopes. Foothills of the Thuringian Forest reach up to the place. The corridor borders on the Franconian border landscape. The view of Franconia is excellent.

history

The village was first mentioned in documents from 1330-1340. The place served many lords over the years. Until the 12th century it belonged to the Franconian Grabfeldgau. Agriculture shaped and still shapes the village. In the 17th century there were 50 looms in the village. Today tourism has priority. In 1918 the artist Ewald Hess was born in the village .

The most famous son of the village is the painter Ewald Hess (1918–1996).
