St. Petersburg (Quadrille)

St. Petersburg is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 255). It was performed for the first time on May 26, 1861 in the palace of Grand Duke Constantine in Pavlovsk , Russia.

In the catalog of works by Johann Strauss (son), opus number 255 is assigned twice. In addition to this quadrille, romance No. 2 is also listed under this number. The quadrille was premiered at a concert in the palace of Grand Duke Constantine. At this concert Strauss also played many works by other composers such as B. Richard Wagner , Gioachino Rossini or Franz Schubert . The quadrille, based on Russian themes, was initially named Hommage St. Petersbourgh . The composer paid homage to the city of St. Petersburg . In Vienna, the name of the quadrille was then changed to St. Petersburg . The work was very well received in Russia, while in Vienna, where it was played for the first time on January 5, 1862 in the Dianabad Hall , it was received rather cautiously.
