St. Peter and Maternus

St. Petrus und Maternus is the Roman Catholic parish church in Kesseling in the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

In 762, Pippin the Younger donated the Wald cell , which he raised to a monastery, and assigned it to the Prüm Abbey , which owned rich property in Kesseling. The church of St. Peter was first mentioned in 772.

From the Romanesque church that replaced the older building, the eastern choir tower from the first half of the 13th century with a diamond roof and recessed semicircular apse with quatrefoil window has been preserved. To the west is a single-nave nave built in 1791 with a three-sided east end, the middle wall of which is formed by the almost square choir tower.

The baroque high altar

Inside

The baroque high altar protrudes from the furnishings. It was created around 1695 for the Maria Laach Abbey Church . There he stood under the ciborium until the abbey was abolished in 1802 . When the inventory of the secularized abbey was auctioned, the altar ended up in the Kesseling parish church, which was expanded in 1791. Because of the low ceiling height of the simple hall building, the middle altarpiece had to be removed.
