history

Interior view of St. Sebastian

The church was built on an old plague cemetery in 1635. It was completed in the spring of 1636. The consecration took place on May 1, 1636. The chapel used to be surrounded by an oak forest and it was popularly called St. Sebastian im Eichwald . A hermit lived by the church until 1729 . The chapel was probably rebuilt in the early 18th century. During the battle of Oberkammlach in 1796, French republican troops devastated the chapel. In the following two years the church was renovated. The turret was renewed in 1858. In the years 1884, 1919/20, 1939/40 and 1966 (exterior) renovations took place again.

Building description

Exterior view of the choir of St. Sebastian

The flat-roofed hall has three axes with a semicircular end . The inner walls are structured with pilaster strips arranged axially . In the west corners they are narrow and kinked. The semicircular end is also divided into three axes. A cornice closes the pilaster strips on the sides of the crown axis. In the inclined axes and the two eastern nave axes there are round-arched, recessed windows. In the western part of the chapel there is a fielded wood gallery . The west door is arched . The outside of the chapel is structured by pilaster strips that meet at the western corners. Above it is a short, profiled and cranked cornice and a thin cornice on the west gable. A sheet metal roof turret on the west gable protrudes on profiles and has a square base and an octagonal upper floor with arched openings . A profiled cornice is attached to the main sides.

Furnishing

The neo-baroque ceiling paintings show Saint Sebastian in the large oval field and Marian symbols in yellow tone painting in the diagonals. The oval field was painted in 1951 by Ludwig Dreyer from Ottobeuren in Upper Swabia , the Marian symbols, a rose, a morning star, a tower and an ark are from 1947. The Eternal Light was created in the middle of the 18th century as a lively Rococo work. The pulpit made of marbled wood was created in the period of historicism in the second half of the 19th century. The basket is polygonal with evangelists painted on wood in the arched panels. The chairs, created around 1700 and mainly made of softwood, have tail cheeks with spiral acanthus carving and angel heads made of oak on the front cheeks.

The two cupboards flanking the altar are marked 1798. They have flat tail gables and are adorned with rich folk painting. The two door panels of the left cabinet are painted with the hearts of Jesus and Mary, the door panels of the right cabinet bear a Jesus and Mary monogram. In the popular lectern from the 18th century an inlay forms the Jesus monogram. Saint John Nepomuk and Saint Magnus were created around 1720 from the painted wooden figures in the chapel. Saint Sebastian probably dates from the middle of the 18th century. A lecture crucifix was made in the second half of the 18th century.

altar

The pink and gray marbled wooden altar was created around 1710/1720. The stipes are box-shaped, the polygonal tabernacle is decorated with corner pillars and a flat dome. In the central axis there is a wrought iron grid in spiral shapes. Two statues in the two shell niches of the oblique axes each carry a book. A baby Jesus from Prague stands on the tabernacle . The altarpiece depicting Saint Sebastian as intercessor for the poor souls closes with a flat curve. On either side there are three winding Corinthian columns, of which the middle ones are staggered. The cornice is richly cranked. Next to the outer pillars is openwork acanthus leaves with angel heads. A heart of Jesus in the altar extract is flanked by four angel heads. The sloping volutes have flower pendants and an angel's head at the top.

Epitaphs

In the church there are epitaphs made of painted wooden panels, the first of which was made for Johannes Hanzel, also known as Haineler, during his lifetime in 1632. Hanzel was pastor of Kammlach and died of the plague in 1633. The priest is shown kneeling in front of the crucified Savior. A coat of arms is depicted in the lower right corner. Above and below there are numerous banners with inscriptions. The inscription on the lower edge, FAMM 1755 , probably comes from a renovation of the panel.

In the second epitaph, Saint Antonius Eremita and Paulus Eremita are in conversation. The damaged panel was probably intended for the last hermit Joseph Ernst, who died in 1729.
