St. Sophia Church

Sankt Sophia is the Protestant church of Dretzel in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The church in its current form was built in 1736. Only a few remains of the masonry remain from the previous Romanesque building. The building consists of the three-aisled main part, to which a small apse is added to the east . A square lattice tower was erected over the west gable with a curved roof covered with slate. The brick-covered roof of the nave in eastward hipped . The window front is double-rowed, with arched windows on the ground floor and pointed arched windows in the upper row. A special feature of the church are the staircases attached to the apse on both sides, the southern of which leads to the former patron s lodge . Inside, the two side aisles are separated from the central nave of the same height by wide arches, and the room is closed off by a flat ceiling. The altarpiece also dates from the time of the new building and contains three paintings depicting the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Evangelists. The large baroque baptismal font is estimated to have been made in the middle of the 18th century. The organ front, made in rococo style , was created in 1783 by the Schönebeck craftsman Johann David Hamann. The arms of the von Angern and von Ostau families are in the church .
