Noel Dorr

Noel Dorr (born November 1, 1933 in Limerick ) is a former Irish diplomat.

Dorr attended St. Nathy's College in Ballaghaderreen and studied at the National University of Ireland and Georgetown University in Washington, DC

During his studies he received a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm.) And a Master of Arts (MA). In 1960 he began to work in the diplomatic service of the Irish Foreign Office. During his diplomatic career he was, among other things, Third Secretary at the Irish Embassy in Brussels from 1960 to 1962 , and First Secretary at the Irish Embassy in Washington, DC from 1962 to 1964. After holding several posts within the Irish Foreign Ministry, he became Permanent from 1980 to 1983 Representative of Ireland to the United Nations in New York City . During this time he was Irish representative in the United Nations Security Council from 1981 to 1982 and as such acted as President of the Security Council from April to May 1981. From 1983 to 1987 Dorr was the Irish Ambassador to the United Kingdom . He then served as Secretary General in the Irish Foreign Office from 1987 until his retirement in 1995.

In view of his achievements as a diplomat, Dorr has been sent to various negotiations by the Irish government. Among other things, he was now the Irish representative in the negotiations on the Treaty of Amsterdam (1996-1997) and the Treaty of Nice (2000). On June 30, 2001, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the National University of Ireland, Galway .

In 2005 he was elected Chair of the Governing Body of the National University of Ireland, Galway . Dorr is a member of the Irish Times Trust and the Irish School of Ecumenics Trust . He has been a member of the Royal Irish Academy since 2008 . In May 2010 he published the book Ireland and the United Nations .
