history

If one assumes that Herbsleben was once the royal seat , the church must have had some previous buildings, possibly the church was founded under Bonifatius and Wigbertus as Marienkirche around 730 AD.

Herbsleben was the seat of an archpriest until the Reformation . In 1602 - the year on the north side of the tower - the church was fundamentally rebuilt and renamed the Trinity Church. In a major fire in the village in 1818, which destroyed the castle and many houses, barns and stables, the church burned down and was rebuilt by 1820.

Furnishing

After the fire, the church received a new interior and a new organ from the workshop of the Hesse family from Dachwig . It is currently (2012) not playable.

The 46 m high church tower has had its present shape since 1913.

The pulpit , now located in the middle of the gallery in the chancel , was originally located on the northern lower gallery. In the 1960s, the church received a winter church on the ground floor of the tower. In 1983 and 2005 the old winter church was modernized. The Graefenhain artist Gert Weber (* 1951) created the three-part altarpiece from acrylic glass .

The exterior renovation started in 1992. In 2000 toilets were installed in the anteroom to the winter church in order to meet the requirements as a cycling church . The sacristy opposite (formerly a coal store) was also renovated.

graveyard

The church is flanked by the former cemetery, which is now used as a parking lot and marketplace. Today's cemetery is located southeast of the church, about 200 m away. The south side of the church has epitaphs depicting Herbsleben dynasties.

exhibition

The lower of the two galleries contains exhibits from church and local history.

Honor

In 2005, the church was one of the eight winners of the year at the Thuringian Monument Protection Prize (category individual monuments).
