The parish church of St. Vitus of the Diocese of Regensburg is a church in Burglengenfeld in the Upper Palatinate district of Schwandorf in Eastern Bavaria.

history

The history of the Church of St. Vitus begins around the year 1315 with the construction of the building. The first documentary mention of the Benefiztum St. Veith comes from the year 1326. In the course of the Landshut War of Succession in 1504 it was looted and damaged. In order to finance the reconstruction of the parish church, Count Palatine Friedrich allowed the local citizens to hold a "fair to take in the St. Vitus Church and the market" in 1512. The Sunday shopping Sunday called “Vitusmarkt”, which is still held annually in Burglengenfeld today, goes back to this. Between 1542 and 1613, except for a short Catholic interim from 1547 to 1552, St. Vitus was a Protestant parish church. This fact is due to the fact that Duke Ottheinrich introduced Protestant doctrine for his entire domain in 1542. In 1614, Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg reintroduced the Catholic creed, which he also enforced in St. Veith in 1617. In the course of the Thirty Years' War, the parish church of St. Vitus and the associated rectory fell into disrepair. Reconstruction only began between 1661 and 1665. Between 1748 and 1749, the stucco decorations that are still preserved today and the ceiling painting, some of which have remained original, were made.

In 1891 the existing bell house was raised under the parish priest Dengler and the church portal got its current neo-Romanesque shape. In 1937 and 1938, plans to expand the church, which had been planned since 1884, were implemented. For this purpose, the old church choir was demolished and a square building was added to the remaining choir arch, which extends upwards into a dome painted in 1954. In 1966 a new organ was inaugurated in the new building, the historically insignificant old organ was dismantled in the course of a church renovation.
