history

The parish originated in Glasgow in the 1850s. In the 1860s she acquired land in Garnethill , then an upscale Glasgow suburb. The original plan to set up a collegiate foundation was initially not addressed. When an existing collegiate monastery in the area was for sale in 1866, the community took it over. The first services were held in a room there.

Construction of today's St Aloysius Church began in 1908 with the laying of the foundation stone and blessing by John Maguire , Archbishop of Glasgow . The Belgian architect Charles Ménart provided the design . The work was completed on February 6, 1910. The construction of the bell tower lasted until March 30th of the same year.

description

St Aloysius Church is in the northwest of Glasgow city center at the intersection of Hill Street and Rose Street . It is one of the earliest British churches to use reinforced concrete to build .

The neo-baroque building shows parallels to the architecture of Namur Cathedral . The two entrance portals on both sides of the street are each designed with four colossal Corinthian pilasters . The windows above both portals close with elliptical arches . The entrance area along Rose Street consists of three doors. Plaques above the doors bear the inscription "DIVO ALOYSIO SACRUM". The bell tower on the northeast side is striking. Its windows are crowned by segmented cornices . The top section of the tower is designed with open aedicules on all sides . The tower closes with a dome with a golden ball and cross.
