The cathedral of Namur with the patronage of Saint-Aubain ( St. Alban ) is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Namur in Namur ( Belgium ). It is an important example of late Baroque architecture and unique in Belgium.

history

In 1047 the collegiate monastery St. Alban was founded in Namur. After the establishment of the Namur diocese in 1559, the collegiate church was elevated to a cathedral. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was considered stylistically out of date. The floods of 1740 made them completely dilapidated. The bishop and cathedral chapter decided to build a new building on the foundations of the collegiate church and the neighboring parish church of Saint-Jean-Évangeliste. Gaetano Pisoni , who was working in Brussels at the time, was commissioned with the architectural design . The foundation stone was laid in 1751. The work, especially on the dome, dragged on and could not be completed until 1767. The solemn consecration took place on September 20, 1772.

architecture

The oldest part of the cathedral is the free-standing bell tower in the west, which has been preserved from the collegiate church. The medieval basement floors were raised by an early Baroque upper floor in 1648 .

The church itself, the baroque- classical ( Louis XVI -) style held, is a turned steady three-aisled basilica . With its wide transept , whose arms apsidial close, and the long choir and the powerful drum - dome above the transept it is a central building close. This effect is reinforced by the post-conciliar altar island in the crossing. The rest of the artistic furnishings - pulpit, altars, paintings - are largely original. The two-storey, curved façade on the east side had to be completely renewed after being damaged by weather around 1900.

organ

The organ goes back to an instrument that was built between 1844 and 1849 by the organ builder Wilhelm Korfmacher. The imposing organ case has been preserved to this day . The instrument had around 50 stops on three manuals and a pedal . Over the years the organ has been renovated several times, and extensively rebuilt between 1964 and 1968. Today the instrument has 60 registers on four manuals and a pedal.
