St Andrew's in the Square

St Andrew's in the Square is a former church building and now an event building in the Scottish city ​​of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Construction of the church began in 1739 and was completed in 1756. Alan Dreghorn's design shows numerous parallels to the design of the London church of St Martin-in-the-Fields . Dreghorn, a successful wood and lead merchant, had great political influence in the city and held various public offices himself. Presumably he also supplied the wood used in construction. Few of Dreghorn's structures are known, of which St Andrew's in the Square is the most prominent. Architecturally, it heralded a new trend in Scottish church construction. Mungo Naismith directed the masterful stone carving .

The church, which has since been profaned, was restored in the 1990s. Various regional and national organizations as well as the European Union provided funding for this purpose. The total cost of the works completed in 2000 was around £ 3.7 million. It now houses the Center for Scottish Culture .

St Andrew's in the Square stands in the middle of a square southeast of Glasgow city center. Originally located outside the city, the square with the lined houses only developed after the church was built. A portico with six Corinthian columns and a concluding triangular gable protrudes from the front, which is exposed to the northwest . The church tower rises above it . This initially has a square floor plan, but is continued octagonally above the tower clocks on all sides . On it sits a curved one with a lantern . Colossal Corinthian pilasters structure the side facades of the hall church .
