List of mines in the Eifel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This incomplete list of mines in the Eifel includes mines , subdivided into states, federal states, the respective districts as well as the cities and municipalities there or association municipalities.

history

There is evidence that iron was processed in the Eifel as early as the Iron Age . The first smelting plant north of the Alps was built in the Latène period in the 5th century BC in Hillesheim ; There is an iron smelter near Bitburg , in which the metal was melted and processed in an almost industrial way in Roman times . The Eifel was an important economic area as early as Roman times. The mineral resources ( lead , calamine , iron, lime and stones for building) were mined and trade profited from the Roman highways , such as the Roman road Trier-Cologne , which crossed the Eifel.

The number of iron ore mines in the Eifel in the 16th century was estimated at around 500. The iron ore of the Eifel achieved salaries of up to 40%, but on average only 14%. The additional abundance of wood , which was required for smelting, and of watercourses, which were essential for the preparation and operation of hammer mills and bellows , made it possible for the Eifel to represent an important supraregional economic area even in the late Middle Ages. About 10% of the iron produced in Europe at that time came from the Eifel. It was traded on the markets of Trier and Cologne .

In the transition area of Nordeifel to Niederrheinische lowland addition was iron , lead and zinc also hard coal mining.

Mining is still practiced in the Eifel today . In Mayen , roofing slate is being mined in the Katzenberg Moselle slate mine (planned closure at the end of 2019), in Ralingen an der Sauer not far from the border with Luxembourg on the Engel pit in the Peterstollen Gips mine . In the southern Eifel, especially in the Wehrer Kessel , volcanic carbon dioxide is extracted.

In addition, pumice , basalt and other rocks and minerals are mined.
