Cornelia ore mine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ore mine Cornelia was a Breiniger ore mine in the Aachen district . It comprised a mining field north of Breinig-Schützheide with a large number of individual mines , in which almost exclusively iron ore was mined. The mine supplied the Eschweiler Hütte Concordia and the Aachen ironworks Rothe Erde . Today the area belongs to the city of Stolberg (Rhld.) .

Heinrich (Henri) Hoesch III., The last Reidemeister on the Junkershammer , acquired mining rights and leased a 16 km² mine field, which he called "Cornelia", to the Eschweiler Mining Association . The mining took place on a larger scale from 1853, and in 1871 the mine field was significantly expanded. According to this, a mine workforce of around 300 people extracted up to 300 tons of iron ore per year. In 1922 the mining operations were stopped.
