The Bendisberg mine is a former ore mine in the district of St. Jost in Langenfeld , a municipality in the district of Mayen-Koblenz ( Rhineland-Palatinate ), which is used for tourism as a visitor mine .
history
Presumably the Counts of Virneburg already had lead-containing rock mined in the Nitztal.
The Bendisberg mine was developed and operated between 1900 and 1904. After a fire destroyed the facilities in 1903, operations were stopped. In 1915 the mine became the property of the Vieille Montagne . From 1937 to 1941 the mine was operated by Altenbergs AG . During the Second World War, which was promoting adjusted and shut down the mine. From 1950 ores were mined again in the mine. In 1955, 4,272 tons of debris were extracted. After the removal of the recovery enabled ores 1957 the mine operation was finally stopped.
Tourist use
In April 2010, construction work began to erect a visitor building. The expansion of the tunnels is also well advanced. A staircase and ladder were installed to connect the lower, middle and upper tunnels. This connects the three mining levels in the visitor mine.
The former company buildings near the tunnel entrance have been renovated and now serve a gastronomic business that is used by hikers in the picturesque Nitztal and visitors to the St. Jost pilgrimage chapel .
