history

The church dedicated to John the Baptist may have been in an early Christian site in Scotland that has been in use since the 5th century. The earliest evidence is the donation of St. John's Church to the Benedictine monks of Dunfermline in 1128. It was connected to Perth Castle . 1242 consecrated David de Bernham , Bishop of St Andrews , a church at the site, probably not from this time than the choir was completed.

In 1440, in agreement with the monks and the citizens of Perth, the construction of today's St John's Church began, into which fragments of the previous structure were possibly integrated. Work on the choir was probably completed by 1448. The nave was probably completed towards the end of the century; the bell tower was not made until 1511. In the tumult of the Reformation , the interior of St John's Church was stripped of its ornamentation. The church was architecturally unfavorable for Reformed masses, which is why it fell into disuse until the end of the 16th century. Reconstruction began in 1598. The interior was divided into three structurally separate sections and subsequently offered space for three parishes. The partitions were only removed again during a restoration by Robert Lorimer in the 1920s .

The north wing of the transept was shortened in 1823. James Gillespie Graham carried out restoration work around 1827 . Andrew Heiton was entrusted with the repair of the choir in 1894 .
