St Mary's Church is a redundant church building of the Anglican Church in Fleet Marston , a village in Buckinghamshire , England. The building has been listed by English Heritage on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest at Grade II * since December 21, 1967 and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust . The structure stands in a field northwest of the A41 , about 3 km northwest of Aylesbury .

history

The church building has its origins in the 12th and 13th centuries and is probably on the site of a previous building. Changes were made in the 14th and 15th centuries. In September 1725, shortly after his ordination as a deacon, John Wesley gave his first sermon in this church . In 1868 the building was renovated under the direction of George Gilbert Scott . On January 20, 1972, the church building was found redundant and on October 24, 1973, the care of the Churches Conservation Trust was given.

St Mary's is built from stacked rubble stones. The roofs are tiled . The building stands on a plinth and has buttresses placed diagonally . The layout is simple. It consists of the nave with a vestibule to the north and the chancel . A bell tower sits at the western end of the gable roof . In the north wall of the nave, besides the veranda, there is a large window with one opening and a renewed window with two openings from the 15th century. In the south facade there is a window with four openings. In the walls of the chancel there are windows to the north and east with an opening, to the south the wall contains a similar window with two window openings and an archway.

The vault of the chancel was built in the early 14th century. It is supported by octagonal pillars . The roof dates from the 15th century. A piscina is inserted in a window sill on the south side of the chancel . The baptismal font consists of a round bowl on a simple foot, which may have been made in the 13th century. Memorial plaques inside the church were placed in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
