The St Mary's Church is a church building in the Scottish village of Grandtully in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

It was Alexander Stewart who built St. Mary's Church in 1533 for the population around Grandtully Castle and what is now the deserted area of Pitcairn . To accommodate a larger number of believers, William Stewart arranged for the church to be expanded on the west side in 1636. The artistic design of the interior also largely originates from this construction phase. With the construction of a new parish church in 1806, St Mary's Church became obsolete. After initially being used as a side church, the building was used as an agricultural shed as early as the end of the 19th century. The church has been state-owned since 1954 and is looked after by Historic Environment Scotland or its predecessor organizations.

description

St Mary's Church is isolated in the small, scattered settlement of Grandtully. It is one of the rarely preserved examples of a typical simple church in rural Scotland in the 16th and 17th centuries. The elongated building has a length of 24.1 m and a width of 7 m. The stone walls are whitewashed. On the south-facing main facade, a simple door leads into the interior on the left. In the masonry, however, several entrances closed by masonry can be seen, so that it is unclear whether this is the original entrance. Simple windows flank the door. The lintel of the window in the east gable shows the year 1636 next to the initials SWS (Sir William Stewart) and DAM (Dame Agnes Moncrieff).

The artistic design of the wood-paneled barrel vault on the east side is outstanding and is one of the few examples of sacred ceiling paintings in Scotland. The ceiling was restored in 1944.
