history

The construction of the church to a design by the Scottish architect George Gilbert Scott began in 1870. Although the construction was not yet completed, the first masses were held in the church the following year. After Scott's death in 1878, John Oldrid Scott continued the work. In 1884 the building was largely completed and the church consecrated . Work on the bell tower continued until October 1893. As a result of its increasing importance, St. Mary's Church was elevated to the cathedral of the episcopal diocese of Glasgow and Galloway in 1908 . Robert Lorimer was responsible for the revision of the choir in 1920 . In 1925 Thomas Harold Hughes restored the building.
