The family Salewski is a Polish gentry gender and as part of the so-called Szlachta family belongs to the crest Community  to Leliwa. The feminine form of the name is Salewska.

The name Salewski is derived from  Prussian  zalijas  = green or from Prussian  sala  = island and has a  Slavic  ending. That means that he comes from Masuria in East Prussia . It originally referred to the large landowner of sage meadows. The family has long been an integral part of the magnate class in Poland.

At the time of the Kingdom of Poland  and  Poland-Lithuania, members of the family  comprised  several prominent statesmen who held various state offices. Members of the Salewski dynasty were to be found, for example, in the positions of hetmanvoivod  or  castellan .

References to the family go back to the 17th century.
