The Ankara State Art and Sculpture Museum ( Turkish Ankara Devlet Resim ve Heykel Müzesi ) is a museum in the Ulus district of Ankara near the Ankara Ethnographic Museum . It was planned by the architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu on the instructions of the state founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and built in 1927. The building, which was used as the Halkevi ( People's House ) until 1950 , was converted into a museum in 1980. In 1985 the museum was restored by the Hacı Ömer Sabancı Foundation .

Pictures, sculptures and statues, ceramics, prints and Turkish decorative art from before the founding of the republic until today are exhibited in the museum. The first section shows works by painters and draftsmen such as Şeker Ahmet Paşa , Zekai Paşa , Halil Şerif Paşa and Hoca Ali Paşa , while the second section shows works by artists from the time of the Republic such as İbrahim Çallı , Hikmet Onat and Namık İsmail to take their place.

In 2010, thieves left photocopies in the museum instead of 13 charcoal drawings , and it was found that five boards that were not assigned to any artist had been lost. In 2014, the Frankfurter Allgemeine reported that between 2005 and 2009, museum employees had replaced a total of 302 works with a total value of USD 250 million with counterfeits and had sold the originals. The crime was not noticed for a long time.
