The Ankara Ethnographic Museum ( Turkish: Ankara Etnoğrafya Müzesi ) is a folklore museum for Turkish culture in Ankara, opened in 1930 .

Museum building

The building was designed by the architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu and built between 1925 and 1928 on Namazgah Hill (Namazgâh Tepesi). The floor plan is rectangular with a central, domed rotunda . The museum building is located in Gündoğdu, Altındağ, and was opened on July 18, 1930 with 1250 exhibits acquired by then, covering a period since the 12th century. The first director was Hâmit Zübeyir Koşay on June 1, 1927 . In front of the museum is a bronze statue of Ataturk by the Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica, erected in 1927 .

Kemal Ataturk's repository

The museum received a special status after the death of the state's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on November 10, 1938, when his remains were transferred from Istanbul to Ankara. Collections

The collection and exhibitions focus on Turkish folk art with ceramics, woodwork, historical weapons and armaments, utensils, weaving art and carpets with a focus on the past 500 years. You can see a replica of a typical 17th century interior. The older art treasures include a. a wooden throne of the Seljuk Sultan Kai Chosrau III. from the 13th century.

In 2012, the museum was given an Aramaic manuscript , which is said to be 1500 years old, from a New Testament apocryphal gospel ( Gospel of Barnabas ), but its age and authenticity are questionable.
