The Hegge stave church ( Norwegian Hegge stavkirke ) dates from the 13th century and is located in Hegge in Øystre Slidre in Innlandet .

history

The church was first mentioned in writing in 1327, but the building is older. Dendrochronological studies showed that the wood was felled in 1216.

architecture

Well-known Odin mask in the stave church

Only the central building of the church has been preserved. The roof structure cannot be seen inside as a ceiling was put in at a later time. The lower ends of the corner poles are designed as carved plant loops, at the upper ends there are carved masks - including one with only one eye, perhaps Odin is depicted here .

The west portal is flanked by two pillars that carry lions.

Other

There is a cemetery around the church. There is a small bell tower a few meters from the church.
