The Stade de l'Épopée (in German : Stadion des Heldenepos ) is the stadium opened in 2008 in Calais , Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region , France . The Calais RUFC ( Calais Racing Union Football Club ) moved from the old Stade Julien-Denis to the 12,432-seat sports facility. All places are covered. The construction costs amounted to 22 million . The name of the stadium refers to the 1999/2000 cup season , when the then fourth division Calais RUFC made it into the final and only just lost 2-1 to the first division FC Nantes .

Since the 1999/2000 cup matches had to move to the larger and more modern Stade Félix-Bollaert in Lens ; the desire for a new stadium grew. When the club reached the cup quarter-finals in 2006 ; you not only had to move to Lens again, but also to the stadium of local rivals US Boulogne .

The city of Calais commissioned the Icade company to implement the construction project. The design by the Paulin-Mariotti architecture firm was selected. First, the stadium should have a capacity of 8,000 seats (expandable to 14,000). The municipality then decided on 12,000 seats (which can be increased to 18,000). On March 22nd, 2007, the foundation stone was laid by the then mayor Jacky Henin and work began. The costs were shared by the city of Calais (€ 13.9 million), the regional council (€ 7.2 million) and the European Union (€ 0.9 million).

The new sports facility was officially opened on September 27, 2008. In the opening game, the Calais RUFC and Stade Laval (1: 4) met in front of 11,532 spectators. After the game there was music and fireworks .
