The Grenchen city archive is the city ​​archive of the city of Grenchen in the Swiss canton of Solothurn . It was founded in 1966, its rooms have been located in School House II since 1996 , a cultural asset of regional importance .

The collection area of ​​the Grenchen City Archives are files from the city administration and documents on the history of Grenchen. The city archives worked on a history of the city of Grenchen from 1850–2008 , which aims to review the city's history since Werner Strub's Heimatbuch Grenchen (1949) and was published in book form in 2018.

A city wiki was founded to collect information and encourage the public to participate in the writing of history.

The city archive is a member of the Association of Swiss Archivists and is listed in the ISplus collection of information on Swiss memory institutions .

Duration

The Weyslein Buech in the city archive records the Grenchen orphan money from 1679 to 1719.

In the period from 1966 onwards, the archival holdings of the Grenchen City Archives encompass around 300 linear meters and around 10,000 photographs; the library holdings include around 2500 volumes.

The main archive, whose provenance is the municipality of Grenchen, mainly comprises municipal administrative documents from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as individual "handwritten documents from the 17th century". The city archive also includes photographs, images and films, church holdings, personal and family estates, plans, collections, club archives, a Varia inventory as well as newspapers and magazines.

The written (partial) estates include those of the trade unionist Olga Triebold (1903–1996), the watch manufacturer Adolf Affolter (1904–1984), the teacher Joseph Eberwein (1840–1911), the folklorist Franz Josef Schild (1821– 1889), the precision mechanic and designer Albert Bandelier (1895–1983), the clockworker Adolf Gschwind (1886–1966), the solo yodeler Therese Wirth-von Känel (1923–2005), the teacher Leopold Bloch (1872–1942) and of the Federal Councilor Hermann Obrecht (1882–1940).
