Franz Josef shield

Franz Josef Schild (born August 14, 1821 in Grenchen , † December 13, 1889 ibid) was a Swiss doctor , Solothurn cantonal councilor of the Liberal Party , folklorist and author of literature in the Solothurn dialect .

life and work

Schild was a brother of the agronomist Joseph Schild (1824–1866). He studied medicine in Munich and took his state examination in Zurich . At first he worked in Grenchen as a general practitioner , then he specialized in ophthalmology and surgery . From 1874 to 1881 Schild was a liberal cantonal councilor .

Schild was interested in archeology and especially folklore. His work Der Grossätti from the Leberberg , a «collection of folk and children's songs , mocking rhymes , proverbs , weather and health rules , etc. s. w. " appeared in 1864 and was reprinted several times - most recently in 1960. As the subtitle says, he wrote the book as a contribution to the Schweizer-Idiotikon - this had only been founded shortly before, in 1862, in Zurich, and Schild remained associated with him as a correspondent in the years that followed. As the title of two prose pieces from 1864 suggests, Schild told "from the people and for the people". His literary dialect wanted to convey “between Solothurn and the Bernese Seeland ”. He created "a folklore contribution to the social history of the upper Leberberg against the background of the clock industry moving into Grenchen".

Part of Schild's estate is in the Grenchen city archive .
